The Tale of Lola, the Little BichonOnce upon a time, in a land not so far away, there lived a little Bichon named Lola. Tormented daily by children and in extreme pain due to a serious bladder infection and bladder stones, Lola finally reached the end of her ropes and bit one of her tormentors. It was thus that her owner decided to give her up. Luckily, Lola’s fairy godmother, Donna, was watching out for her. She seeded a chip-in fund to pay for Lola’s surgery. Soon, others followed her lead—other kind-hearted fairy godmothers and godfathers—and the goal was reached in record time. Lola would get the medical attention she needed and be on her way to good health! After her surgery, which Lola recuperated from very nicely, and a good dose of TLC, it was time for our little Bichon to go on to her next adventure: moving in with her forever family—which includes a new Bichon sister, Michelle. These days, the only one doing the “tormenting” is Lola who has taken a liking to barking at her family’s chickens. Is there any doubt that our Little Lola will live happily ever after?

10 Poisonous Plants to Dogs!

Apr 01

Ack! Just found out that Sago Palms are poisonous to dogs! The sad thing is that my pet Bichon’s favorite hang out place is under the shade of a Sago Palm…Thankfully, he doesn’t eat stuff from the backyard.

Pet ownership is a commitment

With animal shelters getting more and more overcrowded, it’s heartbreaking to see so many dogs needing to be adopted. Sadly, more and more companion dogs seem to be disposed of too easily by their former owners. There surely must be extenuating circumstances for surrendering one’s dog to the shelter. But when I hear reasons like “I got a divorce,” or “I just don’t want it anymore,” I can’t help but feel a surge of anger. Didn’t these former owners think about the responsibilities of pet ownership before they got their dogs? Some don’t do the proper research when choosing a breed and then are later disappointed that their lifestyles is not in synch with their pets’ (“I really don’t have the time to walk Renny twice a day”). Being a dog owner is a serious commitment.

Dogs are living beings, dependent on us—their owners—for food, shelter, and companionship. In exchange, they bestow on us their unconditional loyalty and affection. They are more than a simple possession to be given up like clothes we’ve outgrown. Here’s hoping that more people honor the their commitments to their furry friends.

doggy car seat = fun, fun fun!

doggy car seat = fun, fun fun!

Doggy Car Seats

Wanna make car rides even more enjoyable for your fluffy friend? Then consider getting a special doggy car seat. Most of these will be elevated, giving your pal a great view of everything. There are many choices out there (check out http://www.dogcarseats.cc/ or http://www.snoozer-dog-beds.com/dogcarseats.htm).

Very Important: Just make sure that the car seat you choose has some sort of safety/harness mechanism to keep your pet safe.

Enjoy today

When we first got our pet, we knew that our time together would not be forever…sadly. But knowing that, we knew that we would make the best of it anyway, right? More than ever, I was reminded yesterday of how we should enjoy today to the fullest.

Our friends have a wonderful lab who most likely has cancer (sigh). I felt very sad when I felt the lumps in his body as I petted him. Guiltily, I was also relieved that my dear little fluffball at home has a clean bill of health. It was a good reality check.

So, just make the most of today—everyday—and enjoy life’s simple pleasures with your faithful friend. Those moments are truly precious.

(Diamond: Hmmm, wonder what kind of special birthday treat I’m getting today?)

Favorite Bichon Toys

I can only speak for one Bichon…but here are the two things my Bichon enjoys the most:

tennis ball (he loves to run around with it, chase it, gnaw it…you name it)

stuffed toy (make sure the eyes, ears, and mouth are sewed on and not the beady kind to be safe)

What about your own fluff, what toys does he/she enjoy the most?
